Mahatma Gandhi: peacemaker

by jano

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”

I believe Mahatma Gandhi is the 5th greatest leader of the 20th century. A fighter for peace without fighting, a warrior without the war, a philanthropist, a politician, and one of the greatest people of all time.

Mahatma Gandhi, byname of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, social activist, writer, and politician that was born 1869 and died 1948. The legacy that Gandhi left behind has influenced politicians worldwide and his principle of satyagraha -resistance to tyranny through mass non-violent civil resistance the perpetual law against anything repugnant to the soul has inspired many throughout the ages such as famous leaders like Barack Obama or Nelson Mandela.

Gandhi among some of his fellow activists

As a politician he was one of the most progressive of his time and was attacked from all sides. For being too hindu, for not being hindu enough, for being to business friendly, for being anti-capitalist, to protean yet too capricious, trying to destroy the hindu social structure and not trying hard enough to destroy it. he advocated equal rights for many and wanted coexistence between religious sects. he was the one who made India gain independance and is known as one of the founding fathers of modern india.

And in a gentle way he did

Gandhi is one of the most iconic people of all time with his famous feat of rebellion against the british army by fasting for 20 days. He was renowned for leading this campaign for India’s independence from british rule using purely non violent resistance. Now he is nearly universally recognized as a figurehead of peace and his story is told to children everywhere.
