On Wednesday, January 23rd, Ms. Buffy Cornell of SOLOS (Safe Online Outreach Society) presented to grade 8 and 9 students at Moscrop Secondary, packed into the gym bleachers at 8:40am. Ms. Victoria Lee, Principal of Moscrop Secondary, meets Ms. Buffy Cornell of SOLOS prior to the online safety presentation in the photo here.
Ms. Cornell’s message was graphic and simple. Protect yourself online; don’t do anything silly that could affect your future – reputation or employment-wise. With videos pulled from YouTube and a variety of other youth-utilized websites and apps, Ms. Cornell systematically reviewed with students the Do’s and Don’ts of online participation.
Be cautious posting photos. Never share passwords. Act respectful and restrained when responding to online comments. Always report problems experienced online. These are just a few of the very important messages young people need to hear again and again.
SOLOS has presentations for elementary and secondary students, and parents, too. Global Learning of the Burnaby School District is pleased to be able to support students in secure participation online.
